Svalbard means 'the cold coasts'. Temperatures often drop below -20 degrees in winter, so it’s important to dress accordingly.
Every year there are accidents involving guests who venture into the wilderness without a guide. For your own safety and for the best possible experience, you should leave town only on an organized tour. All tours we offer are led by local, professional guides. Due to the possibility of encountering a polar bear, the guides always carry firearms when leaving town. They have received extensive training and regularly practice with their weapons. Therefore, we recommend booking all activities in advance - we can arrange that for you!
On Svalbard, you pay with Norwegian Krone. Svalbard is not subject to customs and VAT regulations, so many goods are cheaper than on the Norwegian mainland. However, products like fruit, vegetables and milk are more expensive due to the high shipping costs. In Longyearbyen, you can buy almost anything, from groceries to sports and leisure equipment, clothing, gifts and souvenirs. Please note that there is no bank or ATM, most guests pay by (credit) card.
Svalbard is connected to the mainland network via a fiber optic cable, providing good coverage in town. Outside of Longyearbyen, it can be difficult to find a signal. Broadband internet is available in Longyearbyen. Guests at Funken Lodge and the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel have free wifi.
