Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic region, lies halfway between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole, between 74° and 81° north latitude. Largest island is Spitsbergen, Longyearbyen is the capital.
The breathtaking landscapes here have been shaped by thousands of years of ice ages. Enormous glaciers carved the original plateau, creating impressive fjords, valleys and mountains!
The polar bear is the most famous animal of Svalbard, but the archipelago is home to other unique wildlife as well, such as walruses, seals, whales, Arctic foxes and the distinctive Svalbard reindeer.
Svalbard is home to about 2,650 residents, with 2,100 living in Longyearbyen. The population is international, with over 50 nationalities represented, and relatively young compared to the Norwegian mainland. Most residents are between 25 and 49 years old.
Experience the unique Polar Night or the Midnight Sun, which dominate the sky for much of the year. The "dark season" runs from 26 October to 15 February, while you can enjoy the Midnight Sun from 20 April to 23 August. This makes every trip to Svalbard an adventurous and exotic experience!
The climate in Svalbard is typically Arctic, but due to its location, it experiences higher temperatures than other areas at the same latitude. The average temperature is -16°C in January and +6°C in July.
Svalbard has three seasons:
Northern Lights Winter, Sun Winter and Polar Summer.
Stay in the northernmost city in the world and enjoy the culinary delights. Book an electric snowmobile safari, a unique dog sledding trip and witness the northernmost Northern Lights in the world at Camp Barentz!
Most guests fly to Tromsø or Oslo, stay overnight in a hotel and fly with Norwegian or SAS to Longyearbyen the next morning. The flight from Tromsø takes about 1.5 hours, the one from Oslo takes 3 hours. Sometimes it is possible to fly to Longyearbyen in one day.
